DEBATING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING

With heart, soul, mind and strength

HAVING A VOICE

In the Junior School we train our students to be confident and proficient debaters and public speakers. Students are provided with a variety of opportunities to debate in competitions at a regional, state and national level.

Our students participate in the IPSHA and HICES Public Speaking Competitions in Years 3 to 6 and train and prepare for these competitions with dedicated teachers during school hours.

In debating, our students in Years 5 and 6 are offered the opportunity to participate in the HICES and NGS Super Virtual Debating Competitions and the IPSHA and HRIS Debating Gala Days. These students work with teachers trained as Debating Adjudicators to build on their debating skills, development of convincing arguments and the presentation of their speech. Students work in collaboration with each other to brainstorm and establish points and a cohesive flow of arguments.  The students develop a strong connection with their teammates and take on the responsibility of being a positive contributor to a debate team.

These opportunities allow the students to visit a variety of schools across the Hunter Region and NSW as well as virtually Australia wide.
